While we would have preferred it if none of the cats we TNR'd went back outside, we had to look at what was best for them. After growing up outside, most of the older cats wanted nothing to do with us or being inside and it negatively affected their health being in the house. We gave all the cats an adjustment period. At the end of the period, we accessed how they were doing and made a decision on what would be best for them moving forward.
We do our best to keep them as safe as possible while they are outside, and make sure they have a constant food source.
We have four outdoor houses for our TNR kitties. Two of them are heated in the winter. There are several water sources around the yard, and a food bowl on the porch. The kitties know they are safe to lounge and relax in our yard.

Carmel is the mother of two of our indoor kitties - BB and Simba.
She is full of spunk, to say the least.
It has taken me 4 years to get her comfortable with me picking her up. She loves to get pets and rub against my legs when I'm outside. She is still very skittish around others.
Carmel did not adjust to being indoors. She was miserable and it made her aggressive. She would hiss and try to swat and bite me. Her aggression eased after going back outside. I still hope one day that she will want to come inside.

Grey is the father of many of our indoor kitties because he was the alpha male in the first colony.
He is very cautious of humans. It has taken me 4 years to get him to be comfortable with me sitting near him. He will also boop my finger with his nose. He does not let me pet him, so it is impossible to handle him in any way.
We tried adjusting him to indoor life, but he was miserable. We want him safe and healthy, but that was just not possible with him being inside.
He loves lounging around our yard and front porch.

Tortie is the mom of Minnie and Meeka. She did not like being touched and would only let us handle her when we had to.
She did not adjust to being inside. She was so miserable that it was affecting her physically. We worked with our vet and tried a few different things, but nothing worked. We let her go back outside, and within a few days we saw a huge improvement in her physically and she was happily playing and hunting bugs in the front yard.

Jack Jack is Silkie's son. He was born with a deformity in his front left leg. His leg was examined by our vet and it was determined that there was nothing that would prevent him from living normally.
He is 100% capable of getting around, running, climbing, and hunting.
Jack Jack is very skittish. He wouldn't let me get close enough to touch him, but he never showed any aggression.
After getting him neutered and examined by our vet, we determined that it was safe and what was in his best interest to let him go back outside.

Silkie followed her kitten, Tribble, into the house in March 2023. Silkie is the mother of Moana, making her the grandmother to all of Moana's kittens.
Silkie prefers to spend her day, and night, lounging outside. She is very low energy and just likes to relax. After spending all of her life so far outside as a stray, I can't blame her for finally wanting to relax when able.
She also likes to play a bit with Tribble and the other kittens. She is very loud and vocal when she wants the attention of someone.
She can be handled, but doesn't like touch. She does like gentle pets under her chin occasionally.
2025 UPDATE:
Despite our best efforts, Silkie proved to be a Houdini cat. She somehow figured out how to escape our outdoor cat enclosure, not once, but three times. We honestly have no idea how she got out, but did reinforce the entire structure to make sure no one else could get out.
Silkie now spends her days lounging on our front porch, sleeping in my flower bed, hunting vermin, and playing with Grey. She is the happiest we've seen her.
Sanctuary cat.
